LENA'S ENCOUNTER
My first “encounter,” I guess you would say, was in August of 2005. I had moved to Georgia just a couple of months before. Just before I moved, tickets went on sale for the Never Gone tour in Atlanta. The day they went on sale I was online, furiously trying to get my tickets as quickly as I could for myself, my mom (who goes to ALL of the Backstreet shows), and one of my best friends. I was excited when my ticket order went through and even more thrilled to discover that my seats were second row center! In my rush to simply “get tickets”, I hadn’t checked to see the location of my seats, so that was a great surprise.
Fast forward two months and it was August, and I was in Atlanta, Georgia for the first time in my life. It was show day, so I was on my normal Backstreet high. When the doors to the arena opened, my excitement simply grew as my best friend, mom, and I walked closer and closer to the stage to get to our seats. We made ourselves comfortable and chatted throughout as the arena filled up. I kept looking around the arena, just taking it all in. One of those times, I looked over and saw a blonde woman with a little blonde, curly haired boy. For a moment I thought I was imagining things, but I wasn’t. It was Leighanne and Baylee, along with her family. I was curious as to where they were going to sit. The front was pretty well full already. The only group of open seats were directly behind us, and that’s where they sat. The family filed into the row, and when all was said and done, Leighanne and Baylee were sitting directly behind me.
I wanted to ask for a picture, but one of the security guys had told us earlier that we couldn’t take pictures, so I didn’t ask. I also didn’t want to bother her a great deal since she was with her family. We could hear Baylee talking and asking questions, and at one point I turned and Leighanne and I made eye contact, so I spoke to her. We chatted a little and I told her that Baylee was just adorable. She was just a sweetheart. Through the whole concert Baylee and her danced and sang along, and Baylee got a thrill out of the “snow” that fell during Siberia. About halfway through the show, Leighanne took Baylee backstage but then came back out into the audience. The rest of the family and her stayed through the rest of the show, up until the encore, when they ducked backstage again.
My next “encounter” with Leighanne came less than a year later at Brian’s solo CD release party in Duluth. Baylee and Leighanne were both there with him. I spoke with Brian briefly after he signed my CD and then spoke with Leighanne when she signed mine. As before, she was a total sweetheart. A lot of people left once their CDs were signed, but we hung out afterwards. It gave us that stayed a chance to talk to Leighanne and Brian more. Once the store was cleared out, we looked around and did a little shopping, and while we were Leighanne came back in to do some shopping of her own.
It has been over this past year that I have really gotten to know and talk with Leighanne more. It started off with a simple question and grew into a friendship. I feel very lucky and blessed to know Leighanne and have her in my life. She has been a wonderful source of support to me during some rough times, and I have hopefully been the same to her. She’s a phenomenal woman, and I look forward to getting to know her even better in the future!
